Valley of the Damned

Valley of the Damned is the debut album by English power metal band DragonForce. In 2000, while their name was still DragonHeart, a demo version of the album was recorded and sent to Noise Records, subsequently gaining DragonHeart a deal with the label. It was later rerecorded in late 2000 and released as the band's debut studio album on February 25, 2003, following the band's obtainance of the deal with Noise Records. Furthermore, after discovering the existence of another band with the name DragonHeart, it was decided that they would change their name to DragonForce, the new moniker being clearly visible at the cover's top. This album was set to be remastered and released with a bonus DVD on September 24, 2007 but was subsequently delayed and was set for release in the UK on May 24, 2009. The remastered version of the album along with the rerelease of Sonic Firestorm was released on February 22, 2010.

It is at that time Vadim discovered rock music and decided to pursue it as a career. He got a small keyboard (Yamaha PSS-51) and started to create his own music at the age of 12 and carried on since. He is a session musician for various other bands, including George Lynch's Souls of We. According to his profile on Dragonforce.com, Leclercq can speak "French, English, German, and some dirty words in almost every language," and his signature stage move is "Black metal whiskey sculling."He was asked by Herman Li to help DragonForce on a few shows in North America and Japan as they needed a bassist. At first, he was only supposed to play on a sessional basis, but he played with so much skill and professionalism that he was offered the position permanently.
Leclercq played sessional rhythm guitar for Swedish power metal band Sabaton on their European tour in 2011, as regular guitarist Rikard Sundén had just become a first-time father.

Dave Mackintosh

Dave Mackintosh

Dave “Compact Dynamo” Mackintosh began playing at the tender age of eight, and discovered twin kick drums by twelve. Since then, he knew his musical direction, “Metal”! While performing and recording with plenty of unsigned acts throughout the years, he has gained valuable experience not only in his musicianship, but also in showmanship. his thirst for metal has grown ever more extreme. Only now, after two full length albums with black metal outfit Bal-Sagoth, is Dave able to cope with the extreme speed and intensity of DragonForce!

Sam Totman

Sam Totman

Ian Samuel "Sam" Totman (born 26 April 1979 in London, UK) is a guitarist and main songwriter for the power metal band DragonForce. Totman was born in England, but moved to New Zealand at an early age. He began playing classical guitar at the age of nine, receiving formal training for many years.
He was part of the blackened power metal band Demoniac, which also featured his future DragonForce bandmate Herman Li. During his time with Demoniac, Sam was referred to as Heimdall (the Norse God of vigilance). Demoniac struggled to achieve any real fame, despite releasing 3 albums and re-locating from Wellington, New Zealand to London, UK. Due to this, Demoniac split sometime in late 1999, shortly after the album The Fire and the Wind was released. Most of the members went on to form power metal band DragonHeart, which later became known as DragonForce. Keyboardist Steve Williams and bassist Steve Scott left DragonHeart to form Power Quest with whom Sam recorded on their demo and first album, Wings of Forever. Sam also provided guest instrumentation on the band's following album, Neverworld.
Totman is the primary songwriter of DragonForce, writing both music and lyrics for a majority of their discography.

Herman Li

Herman Li

Herman Li (Chinese: 李康敏, Hanyu Pinyin: Lǐ Kāng Mǐn;born on October 3, 1976 in Hong Kong) is a British Chinese musician, best known as a guitarist for the power metal band DragonForce.

Playing style

Li draws influences from rock, all sub-genres of metal as well as video game music and often mimics sounds from popular retro games from the late 80s, early-90s arcade, and PC games. For example, Li has been known for making several Pac-Man-type noises in the song "Through the Fire and Flames" on Inhuman Rampage. His playing style consists of fast descending and ascending legato and staccato licks, exotic scalar runs, making extensive use of the harmonic minor and Phrygian dominant scale, extreme use of his whammy bar, quick full ascending and descending sweep picking arpeggios, alternate picking and tapping (especially two-handed) on the higher frets as well as incorporating many other shred guitar style techniques. Li is left-handed but learned to play right-handed. Recently, he has started to use a device called the Hot Hand that sits on his right hand like a ring, which causes extreme vibrato when shaken, giving him greater capacity to emulate certain video game sounds. Li has stated John Petrucci's fast guitar playing heavily inspired his own style.

Equipment

Guitars

Li uses Ibanez E-gen guitars, his signature Ibanez models based on his old Ibanez S Series, which was retired from stage at the end of the Inhuman Rampage tour. The EGEN18 has a 'Transparent Violet Flat' finish (transparent purple on a flamed-maple top), and the EGEN8 has a 'Platinum Blonde' finish (natural wood finish with a flamed-maple top). Both have a rosewood fingerboard and gold hardware. The E-Gen model has many unique features and improvements over a standard S, including its versatile tone selection with coil tap switching for both the bridge and neck pickups, Edge Zero bridge (the EGEN8 has Edge III), custom DiMarzio HLM pickups (the EGEN8 has Ibanez pickups) and an extended scoop on the lower horn of the body, as well as a 'Kung-Fu grip' on the upper horn shaped by Li's hand. It is currently Ibanez's flagship model for S body style guitars.
On 9 May 2010, Li announced via Facebook that he had received a custom-made Ibanez 7-string guitar. As of yet no details are known about this guitar, other than it has seven strings, and it is unknown whether it will be mass-produced for his E-Gen signature line.
Before the E-Gen, he had been known to play Ibanez S Prestige guitars. An Ibanez S470SOL (Japanese build 1995), a seven string Ibanez 540S7 (Japanese build 1991) (used in Revolution Deathsquad, Storming the Burning Fields, before the second verse and in the outro of Heartbreak Armageddon and the bridge section of Operation Ground and Pound), and an Ibanez S540FMTTS (Japanese build 1995). He has also been seen playing an Ibanez S2170FB and an Ibanez S2170FW. He also owns an Ibanez Jem7BSB, which has been used on every DragonForce album for recording rhythm guitar parts, an Ibanez J Custom RG, an Ibanez RG2228 (8-string model), and a PRS Modern Eagle, which he received as a gift from Paul Reed Smith and can be seen in the studio.

DragonForce

DragonForce are an English power metal band from London. Formed in 1999, the group is known for its long and fast guitar solos, fantasy-based lyrics, and electronic sounds in their music to add to their retro video game-influenced sound. As of 2011 guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman have remained the only two constant members, since original vocalist ZP Theart has departed from the group and has been replaced with Marc Hudson.

Musical style

The band have frequently referred to their style as power metal. Herman Li commented on descriptions of the band's style in an interview with Guitar World: "'Nintendo metal', 'extreme power metal', 'Bon Jovi on speed', 'Journey meets Slayer', ... people are always coming up with weird labels for us." The band has sometimes been mislabeled as a speed metal band. due to the fast tempos present in their songs, but always as a supplement to other types of metal descriptors.

Controversy

Controversy for DragonForce occurred in late 2006 shortly after the Inhuman Rampage tour gained larger audiences in later cities. The band had many technical difficulties with the guitars, which is deemed to be the most "stand-out feature" in their music. The band also drop-tuned their instruments to E-flat tuning on that tour. This, coupled with low-quality recordings of the live performances that were subsequently uploaded to the Internet, created rumors of the band speeding up their music in-studio due to being unable to perform it live at such speeds. The band dispelled these rumors in subsequent tours, performing their solos at the same speed as on the albums.[citation needed] Herman Li stated, "Graspop Metal Meeting of 2006 was [a] total disaster. The technician we had back then didn't even tune the guitar, and no monitoring was done properly. We didn't hear anything...". He also said that most of the Inhuman Rampage tour was bad overall due to technical difficulties.
